One thing in the recent times has changed the whole world, it has brought a revolution in every field be it medicine, communication, entertainment, networking, business and whatever you can count.
OPTICAL FIBERS have changed the way these things were looked upon. You all will be amazed and my Sikh brothers and sisters will feel proud to know that the brain behind these revolutionary fibers is of a Sikh. Dr. Narinder Singh Kapany is the Sikh who has made endoscopy , high capacity telephone lines, high speed Internet availability and so many other such thing possible. He was named one of seven 'Unsung Heroes' by the Fortune magazine in their 'Businessmen of the Century' issue ( Nov 22, 1999).
Dr. Narinder Singh Kapany was in India and did his graduation from Agra University in India, he completed advanced studies in optics at the Imperial College of Science and Technology, London, and received his Ph.D from the University of London in 1955. He has lived in United States for more than forty-five years.
The Fortune magazine says, "In high school, a teacher told Kapany that light could travel only in a straight line. Kapany set out to prove him wrong and wound up creating fiber optics."
His achievements have not ended. He has got more than one hundred and twenty patents in his name and was a member of National Inventors Council. The major scientific societies to which this great Sikh personality is linked are:
- The British Royal Academy of Engineering

This is not even half way, -
- He founded his first company way back in 1960 called Optics Technology Inc.

He gifted $500,000 to the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco which led to the establishment of first ever permanent Sikh Arts gallery in North America. The gallery is named in the name of his wife 'The Satinder Kaur Kapany Gallery of Sikh Arts'.
His on board plans include a gift to the Sikh community. A world class quality Sikh High School with the aim to produce the Sikh leaders for tomorrow.
He lives in the San Francisco Bay area with his wife named Satinder Kaur Kapany. His son, Rajinder is a hi-tech executive and his daughter, Kiran, is an attorney and a film maker.
