Dr. Narinder Singh Kapany -Father of Optical Fibres

One thing in the recent times has changed the whole world, it has brought a revolution in every field be it medicine, communication, entertainment, networking, business and whatever you can count.
OPTICAL FIBERS have changed the way these things were looked upon. You all will be amazed and my Sikh brothers and sisters will feel proud to know that the brain behind these revolutionary fibers is of a Sikh. Dr. Narinder Singh Kapany is the Sikh who has made endoscopy , high capacity telephone lines, high speed Internet availability and so many other such thing possible. He was named one of seven 'Unsung Heroes' by the Fortune magazine in their 'Businessmen of the Century' issue ( Nov 22, 1999).

Dr. Narinder Singh Kapany was in India and did his graduation from Agra University in India, he completed advanced studies in optics at the Imperial College of Science and Technology, London, and received his Ph.D from the University of London in 1955. He has lived in United States for more than forty-five years.

The Fortune magazine says, "In high school, a teacher told Kapany that light could travel only in a straight line. Kapany set out to prove him wrong and wound up creating fiber optics."

He is not only father of fiber optics but his career has spanned in the fields of entrepreneurship, science, management, academics, publishing, lecturing and even farming. He's very interested in art collecting and sculpting. He is also a famous philanthropist. I'm getting my body hairs raised while writing all this, hope you too will get the same while reading about such a great personality. What's your reaction? Don't forget to write it in the comments.

His achievements have not ended. He has got more than one hundred and twenty patents in his name and was a member of National Inventors Council. The major scientific societies to which this great Sikh personality is linked are:
  • The British Royal Academy of Engineering
  • The Optical Society of America
  • The American Association for the advancement of Science.

This is not even half way, -
  • He founded his first company way back in 1960 called Optics Technology Inc.
  • In 1973 he founded Kaptron Inc. and was President and CEO until 1990.
  • Then for the next ten years he has worked as Chief Technologist for Global Communications Business.
  • He also headed the Entrepreneur & Technical Expert Program
  • He still is a member of World Presidents Organization.
Now its time to discuss his life as an academician.
  • He has taught and supervised research activity of postgraduate students.
  • He was a Regents Profession at the University of California
  • He has been a consulting professor at Stanford University in the Department of Electrical Engineering.
His life as an author is still not revealed. Just keep on reading for the same.
- He has published over 100 scientific papers.
- Authored four books on optic-electronics and entrepreneurship.

He has also founded the Sikh Foundation, a non-profit organization in 1967 which publishes high quality books on Sikhism, endows permanent Sikh Studies Chairs and Fellowships in leading universities in North America. He provided a major loan of paintings for the internationally acclaimed 'Arts of the Sikh Kingdom'. He gifted $500,000 to the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco which led to the establishment of first ever permanent Sikh Arts gallery in North America. The gallery is named in the name of his wife 'The Satinder Kaur Kapany Gallery of Sikh Arts'.

His on board plans include a gift to the Sikh community. A world class quality Sikh High School with the aim to produce the Sikh leaders for tomorrow.

He lives in the San Francisco Bay area with his wife named Satinder Kaur Kapany. His son, Rajinder is a hi-tech executive and his daughter, Kiran, is an attorney and a film maker.

I'm sure you will enjoy listening this man for a few minutes.

I am very impressed with the information about Dr. Kapany. His name should be well known as Bill Gates or Steve Jobs. Funny that Dr. Kapany's discovery of fiber optics carries the data of computers and ipads. I am glad he succeed in business. He deserves it. Thank you for your blog.
